Sheffield Winds cause a few Problems

So we are now seeing the backlash of the USA hurricanes and if you have a landscape garden then it may be time to put into effect a few safety measures.

Some Landscape gardeners I know are recommending to stake all new roses and any young trees you have recently planted. Place mulch or add extra mulch to those exposed soil areas.

Remember to remove anything dead or that could stifle the growth of other plants.

This is also the time of year to reduce the amount of water you are giving your indoor plants and keep on reducing up until January time.

Finally if you have a compost heap you can increase the temperature by adding lawn grass cuttings.

Until the next time.

Sheffield Weather Crazy for Landscape Gardeners

Well is it summer or is that it – the weather in Sheffield let alone in other parts of the country make it difficult to plan with Landscape Gardeners, there was a time when you knew after wimbledon the weather would be dry and hot but his year it is all over the place – but I guess we should be thankful for the rain and make sure you have those water butts connected to your drain down pipe just in case this wet weather dries up.

Dry Summer in Sheffield – How to Keep My Garden Green

Now is the time to get those water butts plugged into your drainage so you can collect every bit of water you can get – I have already covered this in an earlier post.

North or South this year is already proving a low rainfall year and the gardens are going brown very early in the year. For Landscape Gardeners whether in Sheffield, London or Brighton this is causing a lot of headaches.

A good tip I picked up from a Landscape Gardener in Sheffield was you need to know if your soil is draining correctly to do this you can dig several holes around the garden about 300mm deep, to check how well your soil drains.

Fill the holes with water and check how long it takes the water to drain, if it drains quickly you probably have sandy soil and moisture retention will be an ongoing issue. You can add mulch, organic material or granules to improve water retention.

Now if the water take a while to go (few hours), then you have the opposite problem which may mean the planting of plants that require good drainage may not be possible. You may wish to consider raised beds if considering demanding plants or using organic material to encourage worms into your soil to help aerate the surrounding area.

At all times a consultation with a Landscape Gardener is always useful when deciding which plants can be put into which type of soil so the plants can be matched to your garden especially as this dry weather keeps up you need to keep water usage to a minimum.

Finally if you have not got hose pipe bans in place yet, you will get them shortly!

Good Luck

Time to Consult Your Landscape Gardener

The Spring is almost upon us and even though we are getting more winter in Sheffield than in other parts of the country, now the time is here to plan what to do in your Garden. Do you want to Landscape your garden, put in a water feature, have different levels for different displays, perhaps plant evergreens to last year round.

This is the time to consult your Landscape Gardener and decide what you want so you can plan now and get things moving before the summer sets in. Spring is the perfect time to start work on your garden, the ground is soft and water is in good supply.

Don’t forget to plan in those lights and decide early what type of lighting you want to install, either electric or solar so you can enjoy your display in the winter months. Also don’t forget to consider the shaded parts of your garden and learn from your Landscape Gardener what plants to install and where.

More next week.

Winter Landscape Gardeners Tips From Sheffield

Landscape Gardeners will often advice that winter time is one of the best periods to eliminate unsightly or unwanted plants that meet one of the following criteria;

Difficult to maintain; High maintenance; Causing other smaller plants to become shaded; Overgrown; Needs too much water; Simply bored with the plant.

Any of the above reasons may be a good reason just to dig up the problem plant and dispose of it, during the winter it is much easier to dig up plants whilst they generally have less foliage, unless of course they are evergreens.

Due to the change in climate more Landscape Gardeners are taking a closer look at watering requirements and if hosepipe bans start to become more frequent in your area you may decide to take a closer look at areas requiring lots of watering. When using water hoses, provided they are not banned at the time, a long heavy use of the sprinkler system say once a week can be far more beneficial than frequent shallow hose watering.

Roots will generally go deeper into the soil if you use infrequent heavy watering programs whereas roots can be shallower into the soil if only a light watering regime is used. Obviously in the winter in the UK even in the area of Sheffield where rain is abundant you can preserve our water systems.

Due to the cold snaps we get in the UK it is best not to cut your grass too short during the winter months maybe leave your grass length about 25-40mm long and in the known shaded areas of your garden maybe 50-60mm long this will also allow the roots to grow deeper.

What to Consider When Planning a Water Feature

A water feature can add value to your property, most people will decide on ponds but an alternative today is the use electrically driven water falls. As ponds are more common we will concentrate on these for now.
Cost is a key consideration and you will find the cheapest alternative and most reliable are the pre-cast plastic, which can offer different levels as you may wish to give your fish some variety. Pond liners or concrete are alternative option but can be more costly.
Most people will build a pond to keep fish, some may wish to have plants in their pond or both. Some may wish to have a water feature to attract other wildlife like frogs or turtles. However the choice of position of the pond is a very important decision.
You want to choose a point in your garden where the pond is offered some shade, but not at the expense of getting it covered with leaves or other debris, shading can be offered by various plants, you may even consider ornamental trees or some form of trellis fencing maybe covered with a plant.
If you are keeping fish you will need to consider some form of filtration and depth is a consideration if you are living in a cold climate, if you have only a few fish or plants you do not need anything substantial, but you should consult an expert once you decide the size of pond and number of fish you are thinking of keeping. You may have to ask more people than your landscape gardener.
If you decide to install plants in your pond then looking at a feature with different depths will give you a little more flexibility in the type of plants you consider. Plants need to be researched properly and this is one area landscape gardeners can offer help.As plants come in all shapes and sizes they grow at different depths and can even be free floating. Also the type of feed you will need to give each plant and the best season to plant it.
Once you have decided on the shape type and scheme for your pond you should find that most landscape gardeners are more than willing to help you decide the best place for your feature. One thing most people overlook once they have their pond up and running is algae control as the last thing you want is a green pond and dead fish.
Once installing your filter system a common approach is to place a UV steriliser in the system which is easily accessible for replacing. These generally are placed between the filter and the return line. If you decide on floating plants try and make sure your filter pump is not too strong that it sucks in and blocks your system, an easy thing to overlook.
Finally if you are planning to have fish in your pond you need to make sure the design does not give the local cat easy pickings! Having stones or rocks in selected positions can give your fish added protection and more stores that are accessed by landscape gardeners now offer a far wider variety and yes, your landscape gardener will know this so use them.
Enjoy your final creation.

Landscape Gardeners In Sheffield Offer Tips on Lighting

Whether you live in Sheffield or any other part of the Country, during these dark nights many amateur gardeners start to think about how they can do more to light up their driveways, rockery’s, general garden features or even your front door during the dark evenings.

Some of you may already have some lighting laid and this is always the first place to go in your garden to further extend your system. You may only want to light a driveway, or have enough lights to supplement an evening barbecue. Whatever you decide you only have to choose from a limited range.

The choices you have are generally from either low voltage or solar power, however if you want to fit security lights these can still be run off your current 240 volt system if you wish.  Solar power does have a downside in the way it needs a good 8 hours of sunshine to become fully charged so the solar panels must not be in a shaded or dark area of your garden and this is worthwhile consideration to help you make up your mind as to which system you use.

Solar panels will avoid the necessity to lay down cables as the majority of the solar power lights have the solar panels built into the lights, however the amount of lighting available from these lights is still fairly low and is getting better as the technology improves plus it is cheap to run but the issue of shading must be considered.

For an electric system you will need an outlet on the outside of your home, unless you want to take the wiring through to the inside of a garage or inner wall. The benefits are they are much brighter than solar lamps and they can be independently turned on or off, or activated by a sensor. If you have the ability or the flexibility to put them on their own circuit you may find this an advantage when you need to turn off certain circuits.

If you have already landscaped your garden, it is not impossible to add lights later, but if you want to use an electrical system over a solar system you will have to dig some sort of trench to bury the cabling which is generally shielded so it conforms to local regulations, also the depth of laying your cable may vary from council to council as the rules do sometimes change depending on what you are planning.

The trench digging will in the main not involve too much but you should be lower than nine inches (Depending on your local authority rules) and beware of any other cables or pipes nearby. That is why it is always a good idea to consult your Landscape Gardeners before you start your Landscaping. This way the cost of digging the necessary trenches is almost negligible. So remember if you live in Sheffield or in any other part of the country try to plan the garden of your dreams with your local landscape Gardeners.

More Tips from The Landscape Gardeners from Sheffield

Water Collection

Water availibility is a major factor for Landscape Gardeners all over the Country as the climate is changing and in some areas the water levels are all over the place the last few years and Sheffield is no exception. Water butts are inexpensive and wherever you have a drain feed off this to a water butt, the back of sheds or garages are the most common, but if you do not have any of these tapping off from your main drain could be worth a consideration if you want to maintain a nice garden.

Running the downpipe straight onto your lawn is another alternative, but perhaps not the best use, underground water storage tanks in larger gardens is now becoming more popular and this technology could soon be available at your local DIY stores.

A lawn can suffer badly in a drought, fertilizers can help as a healthy lawn will recover quicker than a sick one. However be careful as too much nitrogen in summer is not a good thing and should be avoided where possible so this should be a spring job.

When mowing your lawn do not cut it too short in the summer leave it as log as you dare, this will allow the roots to develop deeper, so a rule of thumb is never mow off more than 30% this will allow a chance for your grass to grow strong.

It has been shown that long deep watering but at less intervals also help, however if a hose pipe ban is in place it’s back to the butt. Roots grow deeper and respond better to infrequent watering cycles, but if you think about it unless you live in the tropics this would be a natural cycle.

Landscape gardeners will advice you not to use mulch on grass as this will actually stop moisture getting through, if you need to use mulches use only the very course stuff and avoid fine particle mulches. Another tip I learned form a landscape gardener in Sheffield was to use a windbreak during hot dry summers in exposed areas if you are nurturing plants as wind can also do a lot of damage.

Finally the obvious, try and avoid high traffic on your lawn during dry periods, plus most landscape gardeners will tell you not to worry too much about the brown patches in summer, so long as you avoid the high traffic and too short grass stems your lawn will recover once the rain returns.
